Lithium-Ion Versus Lithium Polymer Batteries? Which One is better?

 As we all know, the battery is a vital part of every electronic gadget and device. It is the lifeline of the device. Without the presence of batteries, electronic devices and gadgets would be of no usage. The batteries tend to supply power to these devices so that they can run efficiently. Usually, there are two different types of batteries used in everyday gadgets and devices that we use; they are lithium-ion batteries and lithium polymer batteries. 

The technical features of these two batteries are different. The lithium-ion battery is the choice of power cell for smartphones and other electronic gadgets. However, nowadays, all the smartphone manufacturers prefer the lithium polymer mobile battery for the smartphone instead of the lithium-ion. It is an endless debate to choose between lithium-ion and lithium-polymer batteries in modern consumer electronic devices and gadgets. In this article, we will have a glance at the difference between these two batteries.


Difference between Lithium-Ion and Lithium Polymer

The lithium-ion battery is a rechargeable battery concept made by the lithium-ion battery manufacturers for electronic devices back in the year 1990. This battery consists of a strong electric generating compartment, which has three parts, i.e., cathode, anode, and electrolyte. Moreover, the lithium-ion battery manufacturers also use an electronic controller in the battery, regulating discharge flow and power.

Similarly, there isn't an electrolyte in between the cathode and anode in a lithium polymer battery. And lithium polymer batteries are generally found in three different states: dry solid, porous chemical compound, and gel-like electrolyte. Among these, the get like electrolyte type is a preferred battery type for laptop manufacturers and electric car manufacturers. Alongside, the polymer mobile battery is also a suitable choice for the latest smartphones.

Which is better, Lithium-Ion and Lithium Polymer?

Now coming to the question of whether the lithium-ion battery is better or the lithium polymer battery is better, it can be answered by examining the advantages and disadvantages of both the batteries. Some top lithium-ion battery manufacturers like OEM batteries make their batteries more durable, provide high power density, no memory effect, and cost less than lithium polymer batteries. These lithium-ion batteries are extremely efficient; they can be termed as high power solutions in tiny packages. But the major disadvantage of these lithium-ion batteries is that they become weak in a period of time due to aging and consist of combustible properties, which is a dangerous fact.

Whereas lithium polymer battery manufacturers like OEM make the battery more flexible and robust in terms of its size and shape. Moreover, these lithium polymer batteries are also light weighted and consist of an extremely low profile. A major advantage of the lithium polymer battery is that they have a significantly lower chance of suffering from electrolyte leaking damages. But their major disadvantage is that they have lower power supplying capacity as well as lower life span and costs more than the lithium-ion batteries.

So, after examining both the batteries' advantages and disadvantages, we can conclude that the lithium-ion is somewhat better than the lithium polymer battery. But both of these batteries have their usage in their respective electronic gadgets and devices.
